Dear ESRA Community,
The March issue of ESRA Updates brings together what defines our Society at its best: global reach, scientific curiosity, and the human stories that give meaning to our work.
We begin with a powerful reflection on WDRAPM 2026 – Global Impact, Real Engagement, where numbers tell only part of the story. Behind the 26,000 participants across 78 countries lies something far more important: a shared commitment to education, collaboration, and better patient care. This global initiative continues to remind us what can be achieved when a community moves forward together.
Highlights from Lisbon – Looking Ahead to ESRA 2026 offers a glimpse into what promises to be a landmark meeting. With an inspiring scientific programme, engaging faculty, and a city that naturally brings people together, Lisbon is already setting the stage for connection, innovation, and exchange.
In this issue, we also turn our attention to the future of our specialty through the ESRA Working Groups, where new ideas take shape and collaboration becomes action. These initiatives reflect a Society that is not only growing, but actively shaping the direction of regional anesthesia and pain medicine.
Our Journal Club continues to challenge us to think critically, revisit evidence, and refine our practice—reminding us that learning is a continuous and collective process.
At the heart of this issue are two deeply personal and meaningful contributions. Through the voices of family members, we revisit the legacies behind two of ESRA’s most symbolic recognitions: the Menno Sluijter Award and the Rita Levi-Montalcini ESRA Award. These reflections go beyond scientific achievement, bringing us closer to the people whose vision, curiosity, and dedication continue to inspire generations.
We also highlight two important ESRA initiatives—the LIFT Mentoring Programme and the ESRA Instructors Course—both of which embody our commitment to education, guidance, and the development of future leaders in our field.
Finally, we are pleased to include a contribution from the organising committee of #WCRAPM 2027 in Chile, offering an early look at what promises to be an exciting global gathering for our community. This forward-looking perspective reminds us that ESRA is not only reflecting on its achievements, but continuously building bridges toward the future.
This issue is, above all, an invitation: to learn, to connect, and to be part of a community that continues to grow stronger through shared purpose.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed bringing it together.
Warm regards, The ESRA Updates Editorial Team
