Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is the ultrasonography performed and interpreted by physicians at the bedside. Ultrasound scanning is rapidly emerging as an easily accessible, portable and relatively inexpensive tool, that can be proven as an useful diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring modality in clinical practice. POCUS allows real time evaluations with dynamic images that can be correlated with patient’s clinical condition and repeatable to reassess the treatment options and monitor the progress of patient’s clinical condition.
Anaesthesiologists in their daily practice face several medical emergencies and decision-making challenges, so a rapid, dynamic, accurate, affordable and easily accessible modality like POCUS could provide a valuable diagnostic tool. POCUS can be used to assess many organ systems in the body from head to toe with unique applications for each system to enable a comprehensive diagnosis during the perioperative care. Therefore, it is important to make sure that anaesthesiologists (perioperative physicians) are aware of the various expanding POCUS applications and the key points of each of these applications.
