Beyond Borders – ESRA Collaborations in Action

ESRA Collaborations in Action

Swallows travel extraordinary distances. They cross borders and continents, but they also return — symbols of freedom, loyalty and trust.

Perhaps that is why the swallow became such a meaningful symbol for ESRA in Lisbon.

Because Lisbon was not only a place to meet again. It was also a place to reconnect, rebuild trust and restart relationships with organisations and societies that share ESRA’s ambitions.

Some of the most important conversations of the congress did not happen on a stage. They happened around tables, between sessions and in meetings with colleagues from the European Pain Federation (EFIC), the European Board of Anaesthesiology of UEMS (EBA-UEMS) and our sister regional anaesthesia societies across the world: ASRA Pain Medicine, LASRA, AFSRA and AOSRA.

Some were long-standing friendships being renewed. Others were relationships ready to grow in new directions.

But the message was remarkably similar: there is much more we can do together.

And Lisbon may have been only the starting point.

With EFIC, there is enormous potential to explore the areas where acute, chronic and transitional pain meet — through education, research and future scientific collaborations.

With EBA-UEMS, renewed cooperation opens opportunities in education, training, assessment, professional standards and continuing medical education, while supporting the development and harmonisation of regional anaesthesia and pain medicine training across Europe.

Beyond Europe, our sister societies connect communities across the globe: ASRA Pain Medicine in North America, LASRA across Latin America, AFSRA in Africa and AOSRA across Asia and Oceania.

Different healthcare systems. Different resources. Different traditions and clinical realities. But many of the same questions.

That diversity is precisely what makes these collaborations so valuable.

Imagine research projects crossing countries and continents. Guidelines developed with broader expertise and perspectives. Joint scientific sessions where different approaches to the same clinical problem can be discussed — and sometimes challenged. Shared webinars and educational programmes travelling between societies. Faculty exchanges. And new opportunities for trainees and young investigators to work internationally and build their own networks.

Some of these conversations have already begun.

Others are still taking shape.

And some… we are not quite ready to tell you about yet.

What we can say is that the direction is clear: expect more research, more joint events, more education and more collaborative guidelines — within Europe and far beyond.

The important clinical questions facing our specialty do not stop at national borders. Neither should our search for answers.

Like the swallow, strong partnerships can travel enormous distances and still find their way back.

In Lisbon, old friends returned to the same table. New connections were made. Trust was renewed. And the loyalty that has connected our societies over many years found new energy.

The conversations have restarted. The ideas are already flying.

The swallows have returned. Now let’s see where we fly together next.
