With the aim of supporting basic scientific and clinical research in the fields of local anaesthetic pharmacology, surgery, obstetrics and pain management, ESRA offers 2 different Grant programmes:


🔬 ESRA Research Grant

The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) proudly presents the ESRA Research Grant in order to achieve the distinctive goals of ESRA such as

  • to encourage specialisation of anaesthesiologists and other physicians in regional anaesthesia or pain management
  • to promote, sponsor and encourage research in experimental, epidemiological or clinical settings regarding regional anaesthesia or pain management
  • to help anaesthesiologists in under-resourced countries to develop their scientific programmes

ESRA members from all over the world are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be ESRA members and should be in at least their third year of anaesthesia specialisation or enrolled in a regional anaesthesia PhD programme.

Applications can be forwarded any time of the year to the ESRA Office.

1 ESRA Research Grant was awarded in 2024:

  • Corey Kull – Pericapsular Nerve Group block versus intrathecal morphine for analgesia after primary hip arthroplasty: a double blind, non-inferiority study (PENGIT)

🎓 ESRA Educational Grant

The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) offers the ESRA Educational Grant in order to achieve the distinctive goals of ESRA:

  • to encourage specialisation of anaesthesiologists and other physicians in regional anaesthesia or pain management
  • to promote and sponsor courses and workshops
  • to encourage teaching of regional anaesthesia in anaesthesiology training programmes
  • to help anaesthesiologists in under resourced countries

ESRA members from all over the world are encouraged to apply. However, emphasis will be placed  on applications from anaesthesiologists coming from countries that lack the financial infrastructures needed to achieve the education in regional anaesthesia.

Applicants should be ESRA members, have spent a minimal amount of time in their speciality, and be in at least their third year of medical specialisation.

Educational Grant Application Deadlines
We are currently accepting applications for the Educational Grant. The remaining deadlines for this year are:

  • December 31, 2025

Please note: Starting in 2026, there will be one annual deadline only – December 31.

ESRA-AOSRA-PM Educational Grant

Grants will be given to joint ESRA and AOSRA-PM members residing outside of Europe in the AOSRA-PM zone applying for support of participation in a teaching program in an ESRA/AOSRA-PM Approved Training Institution in Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine in Asian Oceanic Region.

The grants are given to encourage participation in teaching programs (rotations) and/ or research of a duration of at least three months. The grant should be used for travel costs from the home country to the teaching hospital and for costs of living at the teaching site.

Grants are available for extended training modules only in regional anaesthesia and pain medicine (including acute pain & cancer-related pain control). Applications for other anaesthesia-related subjects will be rejected.

Grants consist of a fixed 1000€ travel expenses reimbursement paid by bank transfer four weeks prior to the start of the educational program (to be confirmed by the program’s director). Thereafter, a grant of 500 € per month will be transferred for a minimum period of three months and up to six months. The total of the grant is a maximum 1,500 € for 3 months and 3,000€ for 6 months+ travel expenses. Please note that 50% of the total grant will be paid upon confirmation of arrival of the grantee by the program’s director, and 50% upon confirmation of full completion of the program as well as upon the grantee’s return to his/her country of origin.

Finally, the grantee is not allowed to change his/her location after the grant has been confirmed. If so, the allocated grant may be subject to cancellation and/or reimbursement. Grants are not transferrable and the training module must be completed within 1 year after reception. Candidates not completing their trainings will not receive the last instalment of the grant and might be asked to refund the money already received. In addition, they will not receive the ESRA, AOSRA-PM certificate.

Awards

🏆 Carl Koller Award

The Carl Koller Award is the recognition of ESRA for an outstanding lifetime contribution to the field of Regional Anaesthesia and/or Pain Medicine.

🏆 Bruce Scott Award

ESRA undertakes to support outstanding innovative activities or developments in the field of Regional Anaesthesia by annually awarding the Regional Anaesthesia Award.

This award is a reflection on excellence in teaching & clinical education in the field of regional anaesthesia.

🏆 Menno Sluijter Award

ESRA undertakes to support outstanding innovative activities or developments in the field of Pain by annually awarding the Pain Medicine Award.

This award is a reflection on excellence in teaching & clinical education in the field of pain medicine.

🏆 Albert Van Steenberge Award

The ESRA Albert Van Steenberge Award was created in 2010 in the memory of Albert Van Steenberge, one of the society’s founding members.
Recipients of this award are recognized based on the following:
• The recipient must be of European nationality
• The award will recognise a scientific article considered most relevant, in its contribution to the practice of regional anaesthesia and published in the year preceding the Annual Congress.

🏆 Rita Levi – Montalcini ESRA Award

The ESRA Best Chronic Pain Paper Award was created in 2020 to recognise chronic pain articles as it is the case with Regional Anaesthesia papers, with the Albert Van Steenberge award.

Recipients of this award are recognized based on the following:
• The recipient must be of European nationality
• The Award will recognise a scientific article considered most relevant, in its contribution to the practice of chronic pain and published in the year preceding the Annual Congress
