I had the immense privilege of attending and speaking at the African Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (AFSRA) Annual Meeting this past November in Nairobi, Kenya — and I must say, it was so much more than just a conference. It was a celebration. A spark. A beautifully orchestrated gathering of passionate professionals who are changing the landscape of regional anesthesia and pain medicine across Africa and beyond.
A Truly Global Family. From Latin America to the USA, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and of course Africa — the diversity of the faculty and participants was inspiring. It felt like a global reunion of minds, with Nairobi at the heart of it all. The scientific program was rich, relevant, and dynamic, and the warmth in the room was palpable.
I must highlight the thoughtful and quiet force behind this magic — AFSRA President, Dr. Ezzat Aziz. Like a true screenwriter, he crafted the narrative that brought us all together. Behind every well-curated session, every intentional connection, was his vision and dedication.
A Stage Full of Stars. We were spoiled with an exceptional line-up of speakers. Each brought their unique energy and wisdom, and I found myself learning in every session. The quality of the program and the diversity of thought and experience were nothing short of extraordinary.
A Personal Thanks. I also want to give a special and heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sonya Lalla. Her resilience, generosity, and grace throughout the meeting were deeply felt. From her warm welcome to the care she brought to every interaction, Sonya was a pillar behind the scenes — making sure that every detail reflected the spirit of AFSRA. Thank you, Sonya, for being a steady light through it all. I hope I do not forget anyone, as all local organizers were exceptional.
A Cultural Experience to Remember. And then… the social events. Nairobi gave us not just a conference, but an experience. One evening we were treated to a stunning acrobatic performance that captured the spirit of the continent — vibrant, bold, and full of life. It was the perfect reminder that learning doesn’t only happen in lecture halls; it happens when we laugh, connect, and share our stories.
